Administrative Offices of the Benzie County Jail

The Jail Administrative Office of the Benzie County Sheriff’s Office can provide you with Applications for License to Purchase a Pistol and fingerprinting for Concealed Pistol License (CPL).  The Records Division is responsible for registering all handguns for the citizens of Benzie County.  There are fees charged for most of these services.

Requirements for Pistol Purchase Permit

You must be 18 years of age to legally obtain (purchase or inherit) a pistol from a private individual.

PISTOL PURCHASE PERMITS ARE REQUIRED FOR TRANSACTIONS BETWEEN TWO INDIVIDUALS  where one or both parties do not have a Concealed Pistol License. 

You must have a valid Michigan Drivers License or State of Michigan Identification card with your current address listed. 

You must be 21 years of age to purchase from a Federal Firearms Licensed (FFL) Dealer - if you purchase from an FFL- THEY WILL ISSUE YOUR PISTOL PURCHASE PERMIT.

YOU WILL BE DISQUALIFIED for a pistol purchase permit if you:

1. Are currently on probation or parole
2. Have any pending criminal cases or old cases without court dispositions
3. Have any felony conviction or certain misdemeanor convictions
4. Have been found mentally incompetent
5. Have a Personal Protection Order (PPO) against you
6. Meet any other State or Federal Disqualifier

To apply for a PISTOL PURCHASE PERMIT, you will need to call our office for an appointment at 231-882-4484 x 243. 

At your appointment you will be required to complete the following steps:

- Complete the License to Purchase questionnaire
- Designate the number of licenses you wish to obtain
- Sign the License to Purchase application with the notary present 

Once the above items are completed, we submit your application for processing which includes a background/criminal history check. 

- You must pass the background/criminal history check in order to be approved  

Application processing may take up to a full business day to complete, so you may be asked to come back to pick up your purchase permit if you are approved.  

If approved, the Purchase Permits are valid for 30 days from the date of issue.  You have 10 days from the date of purchase to return the completed Licensing Authority Copy to our Office by dropping the form off in the ORANGE box in our lobby or by mail at: Benzie County Sheriff's Office, ATTN:  RECORDS, 505 S. Pistol purchase permits are NOT required if you hold a VALID Concealed Pistol License in the State of Michigan.

   Once you have applied for the Concealed Pistol License and paid your fee to the County Clerk,
you can call us to make an appointment for CPL fingerprinting at 231-882-4484 x 243.
The cost of CPL Live Scan fingerprinting is $15.00
and
APPOINTMENTS ARE REQUIRED
at this time.
Fingerprinting is done on
MONDAY, WEDNESDAY AND FRIDAY

Please bring your photo ID, payment in the form of check, cash or credit card along with your receipt of payment from the Benzie County Clerks Office to your fingerprinting appointment.  

GUN REGISTRATIONS/PISTOL SALES RECORDS 

If have already purchased a handgun from a Federal Firearms Licensed (FFL) Dealer and you are a Benzie County resident, you may drop off the REGISTRY/LICENSING AUTHORITY COPY at the Sheriff's Office in the ORANGE BOX in the entryway.  This must be done within ten (10) days of the purchase of the firearm.
