There are two types of custody; legal and physical. Physical custody is where the child is physically located and with whom. Legal custody is which parent or parents are responsible for making important decisions that affect the daily life of the child. Both types of custody can be awarded to one parent, or jointly to both parents.
The law provides that when deciding the issue of Custody, the best interest of the minor child must be considered. Custody cases involve several steps and several factors that must be considered by the Court. For a more thorough discussion of custody please visit Michigan Custody Guidelines.
