Description
The Benzie County Planning Department is a governmental agency dedicated to promoting
sound planning that benefits the residents of Benzie County. Department staff and
appointed commissioners recognize the importance of achieving a desired quality of
life through comprehensive community planning.
The Benzie County planning process is citizen driven. This is a philosophy in which
the citizen directs and defines community planning through local government. Zoning
ordinances emerge from the planning effort and are governed through the Department.
Along with planning and zoning, the Department provides soil erosion control services
county-wide.
Townships zoned by the planning and zoning office are: Benzonia, Blaine, Colfax,
Crystal Lake, Gilmore, Homestead, Inland, Joyfield, and Platte.
The Planning Commission is a nine member commission appointed by the County Board
of Commissioners. Planning Commissioners are appointed to three year terms. The Commission
meets the second Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm at the Government Center.

- Cliff Graves – Chair
